Welcome to Tips for Bowling
The sport of bowling is played worldwide, being most popular in the United Kingdom and the United States. There are many variants on the game, which all involve rolling a ball (called the bowling ball) down a lane to topple a number of objects (called bowling pins) at the other end.
The origins of this sport can be traced to ancient Egypt. In the 1930s, archaeologists discovered some primitive (but recognizable) artifacts which could have been among the first bowling balls and bowling pins in the grave of an Egyptian boy. It has also been historically referenced in the 14th century, when King Edward III of England banned the game for his troops to prevent them from being distracted from archery practice. A version of the game also developed in Germany, and was called Kegelspiel.
It was this German version of the sport that traveled to America and provided the roots of today's modern ten-pin bowling. It was the Germans who helped to popularize the game through the formation of their own clubs (starting even before the American Civil War). It is said that the tenth pin was added to the game to evade a law that was passed banning the original nine-pin game due to associated gambling.
Today, the sport of ten-pin bowling is an international one with its own set of rules, standards, and specifications. The lane itself measures sixty feet long by three feet five and a half inches wide, and features semicircular channels (called gutters) on both sides along its length. These gutters are there to increase the game's difficulty by ensuring that errant balls (once caught in the gutter) stay there and not hit any of the pins.
Similar measurements and standards apply for the bowling balls and pins, and are made possible by modern technology. International leagues and associations have formed for the sport, making ten-pin bowling truly a global activity. These leagues help to keep the sport fair for everyone by ensuring that players and lane maintainers adhere to certain guidelines that would make ten-pin bowling uniform worldwide.
Bowling centers, typically with ten or more individual lanes, can be found in many countries and communities around the world. People interested in taking up the sport could simply drop by the local bowling lanes to meet bowlers and get to know the game, maybe even playing a few tries. Ten-pin bowling is a sport that can be played by children and adults alike, and can be rewarding to those who spend time honing their skills
